DRIVING A CIRCULAR ECONOMY THROUGH DIGITAL PRODUCT PASSPORTS

Closing The Loop aims to implement Digital Product Passports (DPPs) to support a circular economy, focusing on translating the EU Green Deal legislation into practical applications for retailers in the HiFi audio equipment industry. To achieve this, a user-friendly Digital Product Passport platform was designed for retailers, enhancing customer retention and creating new revenue opportunities while promoting sustainable practices. It helped facilitate seamless information exchange in the supply chain to deliver value to different stakeholders, with the overarching goal of achieving a circular economy.

The project focuses on implementing Digital Product Passports (DPPs) in line with the EU Circular Economy Action Plan, which mandates DPPs for all products imported or exported within the EU. The project adopted a top-down approach to understand the legislation, identify stakeholders, and explore opportunities for effective DPP implementation, particularly in the B2B sector. Recognizing retailers as crucial intermediaries in the supply chain, the project focused on addressing their unique needs and ensuring regulatory compliance. The Hi-Fi audio industry was selected as the pilot due to its product longevity, high value, and active second-hand market. A strategy was developed to integrate DPPs into existing product offerings, enhancing customer retention, promoting circularity, and creating new revenue opportunities.
The solution involves a digital platform, designed to meet the specific needs of retailers while facilitating the seamless exchange of information across the supply chain. This platform not only ensures compliance with DPP regulations but also provides tools for value creation through enhanced customer loyalty, increased product lifecycle management, and sustainable business practices. By mapping out an ideal scenario for DPP adoption and understanding their future potential, the project delivered a solution that advances both business objectives and the circular economy, benefiting retailers, consumers, and the environment.
